The training that supports the Level One
Award is designed to give potential coaches the confidence and knowledge to
introduce and develop the game with players in a safe, enjoyable manner. The level one is the minimum requirement to
coach hockey as a lead coach. A
qualified Level One Hockey Coach will be able to: introduce the game in a safe,
enjoyable manner, work as a coach and/or assistant coach, introduce and improve
game playing skills and use small sided games to introduce the principles of
play

LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE
This is aimed at teacher, parents,
players or students who want to assist in the introduction of the game,
especially with younger players. It is intended as an introduction to all
elements of hockey including coaching, umpiring and administration. Linking to
the coach education and umpiring programmes.
The
course will be 10 hours and will link into the CSLA (Community Sports Leaders
Award) model. Those with the Leadership Certificate are not regarded as
competent to run sessions on their own for anything other than small groups.
This MUST be under the supervision of a qualified Hockey Coach.
Coaches
who gain a Leadership Certificate, who then coach regularly with a mentor, can
produce a portfolio of 20 session plans with evaluation and witness
comments. They can then apply for
assessment at Level One using the Accredited Prior Learning (APL) criteria.

COACHING UPDATE
The
National tutor and assessor training has given hockey a good start and
Hockey was chosen to pilot the new National Coach Educator Award delivered
by scUK with six senior tutors. All tutors and assessors in every
sport will receive training to be accredited to deliver coach awards in
their sport. 10 Senior Coach Educators have now attended the Coach
Educator Course. All other tutors will have the opportunity to
access modules of this course from later in the summer 2005 in their
regions.

VRQ
Level 2 (Vocationally Related Qualification)
This award was approved by the QCA in June 2004 and is on the
National Framework giving hockey external credibility through the Awarding
Body 1st 4 Sport.
VRQ
Level 1 (Vocationally Related Qualification)
England Hockey gained accreditation from the QCA in January 2005 and
now has a Level 1 Coach Award on the National Qualifications Framework
in partnership with 1st 4 Sport Qualifications. This award is
now available as of the end of April 2005 be externally accredited and
recognised as a rigorous award with robust Quality Assurance. The course
will be similar to the original Level 1 with 14 ½ hours practical and
6 ½ hours underpinning theory, a total of 21 hours contact time.
