Report to the 2005 Annual General meeting

NORTH WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE 2004-05

An outstanding feature of the season was the generally good weather which allowed the overwhelming majority of matches to be played as scheduled, which was just as well in view of the very early Easter.

The list of Cheshire Clubs successes is:

Divisional Winners – Oxton 2nds (Division 1), Brooklands Manchester University 3rds (Div 4), Brooklands Manchester University 4ths (Div 5N), Alderley Edge 3rds (Div 5), Bowdon 4ths (Div 6N), Bowdon 5ths (Div 6S), Brooklands Manchester University 5ths (Div 7N), Brooklands Manchester University 6ths (Div 8N), City of Manchester 3rds (Div 8S), Alderley Edge 6ths (Div 9S) and Neston South Wirral 5ths (Div 10N).

Runners Up – Bowdon 3rds (Div 4), Wilmslow 1sts (Div 5), Oxton 4ths (Div 6S), Triton 2nds (Div 7S), and Tameside 2nds (Div 8S).

New clubs joining for 2005-06 are Bowdon 9ths, Bramhall 4ths, South Cheshire 5ths and Wilmslow 3rds.

Behind the scenes the League has been concentrating on consulting with all the relevant Counties about updating its Rules, Constitution and Procedures. Much progress has been made on this but the main issue still outstanding is the best way for the League to deal with clubs whose disciplinary record has given cause for concern. It is a sign of the times (and a sad one) that the League felt it necessary to insist that only 18 year olds and over could umpire its matches. The League has also felt it appropriate to seek legal advice about its standing with regard to recent government legislation and current, related issues such as child protection.

In 2004-5 all 4 of the League’s officers were from Cheshire clubs but with the retirement of the Chairman that will reduce to three for next season.
